The 2012 Tampa Bay Host Committee will recruit, train and manage thousands of volunteers to be the faces of Tampa Bay during the week of the 2012 Republican National Convention. Volunteers will welcome guests at local airports and hotels throughout the area, as well as support Host Committee programs and a variety of events during the year leading up to the convention.
At the time of registration, volunteers will select a one-hour orientation session specific to their volunteer type, but will not select specific shifts. Volunteers will select a timeframe and dates, but will not commit to a specific shift until after they are instructed how to do so at Volunteer Orientation in summer 2012. At orientation, all volunteers will be instructed to sign up for at least two (2) four-hour volunteer shifts. All volunteers will be issued an official Host Committee uniform to wear during their volunteer service. Following the convention, all volunteers will be invited to a celebratory event.
Volunteer Types and Descriptions
• Airport Greeters
Locations: Tampa International and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport
Description: Volunteers will provide a sunny welcome and a helping hand at Tampa International Airport and St. Pete/Clearwater International Airport during the week of the convention. Volunteers will communicate event, transportation, and hospitality information to visitors, plus distribute approved Host Committee publications.
• Distribution Center Assistants
Locations: Westshore and Downtown Tampa at Volunteer Headquarters
Description: Volunteers will support the Host Committee at Volunteer Headquarters during the entire month leading up to the convention. Volunteers will assist with uniform distribution for all volunteers, assist with assembling gift bags and packages, communicate with other volunteers daily, and assist with a variety of other office tasks.
• Event Set-Up Crew
Location: St. Petersburg
Description: Volunteers will assist the Host Committee with various event preparations during the week of the convention. Volunteers will help move and set up materials. Event Set-Up Crew volunteers will be standing, walking, or moving for the majority of their volunteer shift. Volunteers will not be within any secured perimeter.
• Event Way-Finders
Location: Downtown Tampa – Outside of Perimeter
Description: Volunteers will provide a sunny welcome and a helping hand around downtown Tampa during the week of the convention. Volunteers will direct and greet guests, plus distribute approved Host Committee publications. Event Way-Finders will be standing for the majority of their volunteer shift and will not be within any secured perimeter.
• Hotel Greeters
Locations: Hillsborough County and Pinellas County
Description: Volunteers will provide a sunny welcome and a helping hand at hotel welcome desks in the lobby of more than 60 hotels throughout Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties during the week of the convention. Volunteers will communicate event, transportation, and hospitality information to visitors, plus distribute approved Host Committee publications.
• Office Admin. Assistants
Location: Downtown Tampa – Volunteer Headquarters
Description: Volunteers will support the Host Committee in the office during the weeks and at select days during the months leading up to the convention. Volunteers will communicate with other volunteers by phone and by email, and assist with a variety of other office tasks. Shifts for Office Admin. Assistants fall mostly on weekdays.
• On-Call Volunteers
Description: Volunteers who are not sure about which volunteer type they would like to commit to or volunteers who would like to be on a wait-list for when other opportunities may arise should select the “On-Call Volunteer” type. On-Call Volunteers will not select a specific shift or specific orientation session, but will be contacted at a later date via email to select more specific assignments.
Each volunteer will select one volunteer type. No volunteer opportunities are available inside of the Tampa Bay Times Forum or Tampa Convention Center. All volunteers must be 18 years of age by July 2012. A driver’s license or government issued photo ID is required. Volunteers must agree to a background check. No credentials or tickets will be made available to volunteers.
While in uniform, Host Committee volunteers must act non-partisan and should not publicize personal political missions or affiliations. The mission of the Host Committee Volunteer Program is to represent Tampa Bay.
